Safety in the sun

Sun protection

  • Shade: Shade provides some protection from UV radiation, but babies and small children can still be burned by reflected sunshine. Even if you’re sitting in the shade, cover your child with clothes to stop burning, and use sunscreen on any exposed skin. Cover the pram with a shade while allowing for ventilation.
  • Clothing: Keeping your child’s skin covered with clothes made from tightly woven fabric such as t-shirt material will protect her from the sun. If you hold the fabric up to the light you can see how much sun will get through it. Cotton clothes with long sleeves and cotton leggings will keep her cooler than clothes made from acrylic fibres. You can also get baby clothes that are specially designed to block the sun and that indicate how protective they are. Look for them at Cancer Council shops.
  • Hats: A hat is a great way to protect your child from the sun. Look for a soft hat so she can still lie down comfortably while she’s wearing it. A full crown hat with a full brim or a neck flap is better than a baseball cap because it provides more shade; a chin strap will help keep it on your baby's head.
  • Sunscreen: Sunscreen combined with clothing and shade is the most effective way to keep your child safe from sun and reflection. Use a SPF 30+ sunscreen on the face, hands and any other parts of your child that aren’t covered by clothes. It will work better if you put it on 20 minutes before you go outside and reapply it every two hours. Sunscreens labelled ‘for babies’ or ‘for infants’ are less likely to cause skin irritation. A lotion is better than a heavy cream – you can also look for sunscreens that are free of PABA and non-alcoholic. Sunscreen with reflective particles like zinc or titanium dioxide provide the most protection and are less likely to irritate skin. Sunscreen stops working a couple of years after it is made, so look for a use-by date on any sunscreen you are buying.

“I am a protective mom. I do not permit my daughter to play under the sun. She will play when there is no sunlight. I don’t want her to have sunburn. She has a fair complexion and I want her skin like that. I’m happy for getting this article because it helps me a lot how I can protect my child from the sun. It’s a very helpful article to all moms.”

Dressing themselves: an acquired skill

Accomplishing the task

You can help him tactfully to accomplish the jobs that are possible. If he feels you are with him and not against him, he will be much more cooperative. It takes patience. Here are a few suggestions:

Deciding on the outfit

Another source of conflict is who is going to choose the child's outfit. Some parents never allow a child to decide what he wants to wear. For some it is a daily struggle. One solution is to agree on who decides clothing for different kinds of activity. For example, your child might decide party shoes are fine to wear to the supermarket but not at the beach, whereas you decide what's to be worn for holidays or a wedding. For a young child, the choices should be simple: a child may be able to comfortably pick one of two shirts, but he might feel overwhelmed if confronted with four or five.

One reason parents get so upset about clothes is that they feel they'll be judged by their child's appearance. So it may help to remember that, in the long run, a child who has learned to make his own choices is more likely to feel comfortable and confident – outcomes that are much more important than just looking well-dressed.

“My daughter is 3 years old and now she knows how to wear her underwear, pants, short pants and pajama. She even practices wearing her socks by herself. I let her do that so that she will know how to fit her clothes. But I sometimes help her and teach her some easy way to wear it. She is learning and applying it though it takes time for her to fit it. It does not matter as long as she knows how to wear her clothes on her own.”

Travel with children

What to take

Apart from the clothes that you normally take, it is helpful to take some things for the car trip. Here are some suggestions.

Source: RaisingChildren.net

“It is a great feeling to travel with your toddler for an unusual experience. But when traveling together with your toddler you are advice to bring some paper towels, clothes, mattresses and many more. It’s not easy because there are many things to consider like feeding your toddler along the road. Usually, they will sleep in the car and let it be until you reach your destination.”

Kyla's Fav - DORA

I am planning to buy a DORA, stuffed toy for my daughter this month. I saw one at SM North Edsa last May when we are in Manila. I regret of not buying it though the price is affordable than DORA dolls. I will ask a favor to my mom in law to buy it for Kyla then I’ll pay her so that she will be happy. She loves DORA so much. We saw DORA dolls with music at SM but it’s so pricey for it work 2K plus. It’s not a toy for me anymore. I limit my daughter of picking or choosing toys with 3 digits only. She has so many toys here that sometimes may put into our garage. I hope mom in law can find it and will send it here.

Healthy Eating for Kid

The following are some tips on healthy eating for kid :

* Lead by example. In order to train a child in healthy eating, the parent or guardian must also have good eating habits. Don't expect a child to love vegetables when the parent doesn't even touch them.

* Don’t keep lots of crisps, sweets, biscuits and fizzy drinks in the house. Ration them, or keep them in a cupboard to which only you have access. Some children will graze on high-fat, high-salt snacks almost continually if left to their own devices, leaving them too full to eat a proper meal.

* Breakfast is the most important meal for children. Ensure that children do not skip this meal. Try a high-fibre, low-sugar cereal, a boiled egg with wholemeal toast, or porridge with milk and fresh orange juice to drink.

* Introduce new foods regularly. Your children are never going to eat mussels in a restaurant if they’ve never tried them at home. Let children help you cook – it may be messy and take longer, but it’ll make them interested in what they are eating.

* If your children are aged 10 or above, let them choose and cook a meal themselves sometimes. They can shop for it too, and they’ll love it!

* When you eat out, there’s no reason why it has to be McDonald’s. Take them to a local restaurant.

* Try different foods on holiday. Don’t just go for chips ‘n’ sausages.

* When you are weaning babies, try to make time to purée what you are eating, without salt. They will grow to love vegetables from an early age.

* Encourage children to exercise outside. Tired children are hungry children, and they’ll wolf down whatever’s on the plate.

Dealing with Toddler Temper Tantrum

The following are a number of things you can do when your child is in the middle of a tantrum, without having to give in:

Ignore him.
Most tantrum-throwers are trying to attract attention. If you don't give him that attention, he will lose interest and stop the tantrum.

Send him to bed or to his room.
This gives both of you a cooling down period.

Leave him.
Obviously, don't take your eyes off the child if you do this in public.

Distract him.
Start to play with a new toy, get your child a drink, go outside for a walk. Do whatever it takes to get your toddler's mind off the problem.

Toddler temper tantrum are an inevitable part of a child's development. They can't be completely avoided. But with some back-up options, hopefully the amount of time your child spends in a tantrum will be reduced.

Source: Parenting Toddlers

“I have experienced this so called tantrum to my child when we are in Manila for our summer vacation. We stayed there for one and half month and so I guess she is bored because we are living in a condo unit in which you have no chance to make friends with your neighbor unlike here in Davao. When sleeping time she doesn’t want me to sleep and so it’s already 12 in the evening. We are so sleepy. What she will do is cry loud and that irritates me and all of us. I ignore her but still she does not stop crying but after a few minutes she sleeps. But now, she is not having tantrums. Thank God or else I will crazy of minding what her problem is.”

FINDING A BABY SITTER TIPS

Your first challenge is recruiting a potential babysitter. Here are some ideas:

• Start looking for a sitter early. If you wait until the last minute, you may not be as discriminating in your choice.
• Ask family, friends, neighbors or coworkers if they know of any good baby sitters.
• Advertise for a baby sitter in your local church, civic organizations, high school, or newspaper.
• Find certified baby sitters in classes conducted by your local Red Cross or YMCA
• Check your phonebook or internet for baby sitting services . Here are some things to keep in mind:
° Services with an insurance bond will cover certain damages or losses to your property; however, most are not likely to protect your children in any way.
° Check to see if the sitting service conducts criminal history checks and screens its employees.

My Loving Daughter

meNkylaThis is the time when I arrived at home and Kyla wants me to take a picture together with me. I am tired for that day because hubby and I went to the shopping mall to buy me a new watch. Kyla was so happy when she saw carrying a Jollibee meal, a burger steak for her. It was her favorite food at Jollibee. She knows that when I go to downtown I always have a food for her or a “pasalubong”. And so I will not go home if I have nothing to bring for her.

Their toys..

hubCar

Hubby bought a remote control toy car last month at TOY KINGDOM. Gosh! It’s pricey but it has discount and so it only cost about 1.5k. I’m against of it because it’s expensive but hubby wants it as his collection. I have no choice but to agree on him for it is his money.

My daughter wants it too but she did not know how to operate the remote control. After a few days, she ask hubby to buy her a BARBIE toy though it is not battery operated. It’s only a display because it will not run but you will push it either before it will run.  LOL!

“Hamburger is one of my favorite foods. Good thing I surf on the net today and found out this article. I learn that we must not eat undercooked hamburger because the bacteria is present in that food. I’m glad that my daughter does not eat hamburger and so she will not get this kind of diseases. I may possibly get this disease and so I make sure that the hamburger is well cooked. I hope everybody will be aware and seriously apply this article to their life for their health sake.”

Helping Your Children Explore Safely

Toddlers try to get into everything.

Parents of toddlers often feel tired, day and night. Just watching your active little person zoom around the house can be exhausting!

Keeping a toddler safe requires constant attention, and sometimes it seems you can't relax for a minute. It is surprising how many dangerous places and objects toddlers can discover.

But the extra work it takes to encourage your child as he explores and learns is worth it. Sometimes you may want to stop your child's need to explore, but remember: exploring is necessary for a growing child. Focus your energy on providing safe places for your child to learn about his world.

You won't have to go running after your toddler so often if you get rid of some of the dangers at home. Your toddler is just too young and too active to think about safety. She ignores things that are in the way. Bumps and falls don't stop her. You can never leave a child of this age unsupervised. However, your job will be easier if you take the following steps:

Source: Dealing with Toddlers

“My child is not that so “malikot” but she is very conscious of everything she saw. Sometimes she will get and ask me. Good thing she will ask me first before opening it. But we parents must keep sharp things so also the medicines and poisons because we cannot all the time saw what they are doing. I’m glad she obeys me when I said “no” to the things which are not good to her. Merely we must acquire their safety to avoid unwanted accidents.”

Is your Child normal?

When your child is between 1 and 3 years old, she will probably be interested in everything and everyone, especially if it's new or different. She will want to be part of whatever you do. She will try to imitate you. She will also insist on trying to do many things by herself.

Sometimes she will strongly resist your help.

ToddlersHere are some common ways that young children explore their world:

Source: Dealing with Toddlers

“This is true because my daughter likes to play with water. I let her play with water when I will be taking a bath of her. I will give her a few minutes to play with it for she likes to wash her clothes. She likes to play with my make-up kit and so I decided to buy her a make-up toy. She is animal lover for she wants it to be fed daily. Every time we eat she will say that we will give our dog and cats some food. She is really a smart kid. We are proud of her.”

Advil- for your child

Kyla is not sick anymore. Thanks to my mom’s neighbor and friend who massage the whole body of my daughter. I took a bath her on the next day using the warm water because that is the advice of our massager. She plays a lot now and not weak anymore. I hope and pray that she will always have a good health. I thank you Lord.

I noticed that ADVIL syrup is the best medicine if you have high fever as I experience to my daughter. After a few hours she is sweating. Better try this medicine to your daughter. This medicine was given by Kyla’s pedia when she was confined in the hospital last year. I have stocks on the ref for in case she will have a fever. But it is advised that your child must eat before taking this medicine or else she may have stomach ache.

Kyla is SICK..:(

Kyla has fever until now. Sometimes she has high temp and when she takes a paracetamol after a few minutes she sweats a lot. Then after a few hours her temp will high. I conclude to call our “manghihilot”, our neighbor here. She said that she has “pilay” in her right hand. Maybe because of the other day she fell on the ground. My daughter is so “lampa”. She easily falls on the ground or anywhere. I hope she gets well soon to ease our worries about her. I and my mom cannot sleep well at night because we always check her temp to prevent her from seizure. Please do include my daughter Kyla in your prayers. I pray that God will heal her so that we can go to church this Sunday.

This photo was taken last December during our Reunion on my father’s side. My father lives with his brother. My parents separated for 21 years. I miss him so also my daughter because he always visits us here when he wants. But now it’s so long time when he came here to see us especially my daughter. Maybe he is busy with his nonsense business. I’m sorry to say this because he never visits us we are alive. He is still our father. It’s okay as long as he is in good condition.

Sweets are not GOOD

One of hubby’s friends gave Kyla a Tobleron. Kyla was so happy and then she puts it in the fridge. She keeps on opening the fridge to get the chocolates. I keep on telling her to minimize eating chocolates or sweets because it is not good. It can cause cough or tonsillitis. When she eats sweets, I let her drink plenty of water. Now, I start disciplining her because I’m afraid she can have diabetes when she grows up. Both of our families were diabetic and so it is possible for her to inherit such disease. I hope and pray that God will always give Kyla a good health.

Virus versus Bacteria: Is an antibiotic necessary?

Antibiotics can prevent serious complications of bacterial infections and even save lives.  However, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, unnecessary use of antibiotics is a large factor in the emergence of antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria.  Even new antibiotics recently introduced to the market may not work for dangerous bacterial infections as a result of continued overuse.  For these reasons, you should not expect or demand that your child’s doctor will automatically prescribe an antibiotic when he or she is sick.  Instead, let the physician examine your child and make a determination whether an antibiotic is truly necessary.  By using antibiotics appropriately, it is more likely that an antibiotic will be helpful when needed.

If your child does have a bacterial infection and is prescribed an antibiotic, it is important to know the following:

  • Always complete the entire prescription.  Discontinuing use before all doses have been taken may result in re-emergence of the bacteria.
  • Do not save any of the antibiotic for future use.  Do not share it with others.  Taking a partial dose of an antibiotic could make the remaining bacteria resistant.
  • If your child develops upset stomach and/or diarrhea while on an antibiotic, talk with your doctor about measures to deal with this.  If a rash develops during a course of antibiotics, your child should be examined by a physician to determine whether he or she is allergic to the drug.  If your child is allergic to a drug, remember to mention it to the physician when future bacterial infections strike.

Remember that even if an antibiotic is not prescribed for your child’s illness, there are still plenty of things you can do to help him or her feel better.  With a cold, provide humidification using a cool mist vaporizer.  Ensuring that your child is taking in plenty of fluids is important with any illness to avoid dehydration.  Helping your child get enough rest may require creative solutions like propping him or her upright for sleep.  As over-the-counter medications can have dangerous side effects, use of these should be discussed with your child’s physician.

This article is very informative because it helps us parents know when to give antibiotics to our child. When my daughter has colds I let her drink of plenty of water and I will give her a Vit C for 3 times a day. Then in the morning her cold was gone. It’s amazing right? But it’s true because I tried it so many times. In the other day she is back on being active and energetic. Thanks to my Vit C, so helpful to my family.

Kyla's Day Out

Hubby and daughter have a wonderful day out today. They went to Sea Wall, SM and to our shop. I regret I stayed at home but I am not feeling well. I feel cold because I have colds, running nose or sinusitis. I got envy with them when I saw their photos. I feel that Kyla is so happy today together with her Papa. She is really Papa’s girl. Well, better luck next time.

Tips to remember when deciding on a pet for your family:

“I’m against of having pet at home because I am afraid that my daughter will be bitten by it. I don’t want to have a headache everyday looking for my daughter Kyla not to touch our pet to be not bitten. Kyla is a pet lover but I am a mom I know what’s best for my child. Maybe when she is a grown up kid because she knows how to take care her pet that time and that she is aware that pets can bite you if they want.”

Weaning your Toddler

How can you wean your toddler from the bottle to a cup?

By the end of the first year, your child may be well onto the cup and off the bottle. Introducing a cup should be done slowly. Start by giving water or juice in a cup. Try serving milk in a cup at one meal. Slowly replace the bottle with a cup at each meal. If this doesn’t work, dilute the milk you put in the bottle with water, so that your toddler will prefer milk in the cup. A toddler should be able to handle a cup, although there may be spills. Don’t expect too much at first. Baby cups with lids and spouts may be helpful.

Source: Community Health Services Dept.

“Kyla stops breastfeeding when she is turning three years old. Then I train her to use cup when drinking her milk, juices and water. I am happy I succeed on that matter because she listens to me and so obedient as well. She can hold the cup tightly without falling it on the ground. But I rather give her a plastic cup than a glass cup because it is dangerous when the glass fall and broke.”

Kyla is Learning

Last night I had a chance to bond with my daughter Kyla. I teach her about identifying letters of alphabet because she still cannot identify. But she knows how to count from 1 to 10. Hubby teaches her to count numbers so also using the mouse in the paint. Now, she will say “Mama, please I want to use the computer”. She is really a smart girl huh. Hubby wants me to teach her everyday because we will be sending her to school next year. Gee! I am so excited! I hope she is a smart like me. Just kidding!

Toddler feeding tips

• Serve toddler-size portions. Let you child ask for seconds.
• Offer finger foods often.
• Introduce a new food along with familiar foods.
• Go easy on seasonings and keep foods separate. Young children prefer simply prepared foods.
• Present a variety of foods from the four food groups. Let your child pick from what is available.
• Present food in a way your child can handle, in bite-size pieces for example.
• Encourage one bite to taste but don’t overdo the coaxing. You can’t force your child to eat anything.
• Don’t bribe or reward with food. Present food in a neutral fashion.
• Keep the television off during mealtime.
• Have your child sit with the rest of the family, at least for part of the meal.
• Don’t hurry your child. Remove the plate without comment after a reasonable length of time.
• Set a routine for eating. For example, foods are to be eaten at the table.
• Seat your child at a comfortable height to the table with feet supported.
• Eat with your child. Children learn how to eat by watching others.

Facts about SUGAR

* My daughter likes to eat sweets or sugary foods. She likes cake. ice cream and chocolate. Thank God it's normal for them that they are hyperactive. It's not because of the sugar. This article helps us mom know the truth. But we should not let our children eat more sweets because possibly they will be diabetic. *

Sugar and Hyperactivity

Some parents and teachers complain that children get “hyper” from eating too much sugar.  However, there is no scientific evidence to show that sugar is linked with hyperactivity, poor behavior or learning difficulties in children.  In fact, recent studies have shown that sugar tends to have a calming influence.

Children may indeed become over-excited and active on occasions where lots of sugary foods are served, such as birthday parties or family celebrations.  This is likely a result of typical childhood excitement, not their sugar intake.  Being tired or changes in routine may also be responsible.

Some very active children are labeled as hyperactive.  However, actual hyperactivity in children is characterized by restlessness, irritability, aggressiveness and short attention span and is difficult to diagnose.

Tips on Introducing Food

* We must be patient in introducing new foods to our baby because they are learning to taste the food. We must consider the food they like to eat. The important thing is they are starting to eat foods. As a mom we should understand them.

When I started introducing food to my baby I learn to be patient. And I never force her to eat the food she didn't like to eat because she will just vomit it. *

Kyla, new model of TIMEX

TIMEX watch model

I bought a new branded watch (TIMEX) last Wednesday. When I arrive at home my daughter Kyla always looks at it and wear it though it’s too big for her. I decided to take some photos of it and I let Kyla be a model. LOL! Kyla was happy for me. Hubby bought it for me as his gift for our incoming Anniversary this month of August.
