Three "PLEAs" For Parents with Young Kids

Follow these "PLEAs" to protect your child and others from getting sick and to help keep RWIs out of your community:

Please take your kids on bathroom breaks or check diapers often. Waiting to hear "I have to go" may mean that it's too late.

Please change diapers in a bathroom and not at poolside. Germs can spread to surfaces and objects in and around the pool and spread illness.

Please wash your child thoroughly (especially the rear end) with soap and water before swimming. We all have invisible amounts of fecal matter on our bottoms that end up in the pool.

How are RWIs spread?

Keep in mind that you share the water with everyone else in the pool, lake, or ocean.

Diarrheal Illnesses

If swimmers are ill with diarrhea, the germs that they carry can contaminate the water if they have an "accident" in the pool. On average people have about 0.14 grams of feces on their bottoms which, when rinsed off, can contaminate recreational water. When people are ill with diarrhea, their stool can contain millions of germs. Therefore, swimming when ill with diarrhea can easily contaminate large pools or waterparks.

In addition, lakes, rivers, and the ocean can be contaminated by sewage spills, animal waste and water runoff following rainfall. Some common germs can also live for long periods of time in salt water.

So, if someone swallows water that has been contaminated with feces, he/she may become sick. Many of these diarrhea-causing germs do not have to be swallowed in large amounts to cause illness.

Other RWIs

Many other RWIs (eye, skin, ear , and respiratory infections) are caused by germs that live naturally in the environment (water, soil). In the pool or hot tub, if disinfectant is not maintained at the appropriate levels, these germs can increase to the point where they can cause illness when swimmers breathe or have contact with water containing these germs.

She is a GIFT from God

kylalying02Every time I had a chance to stroll on the mall. I always look for Kyla’s stuff like branded clothes, shoes and toys. It’s really that if you are a mom, you always think of your child first than yourself. I want to give her the best I could at a reasonable cost because I don’t want her to be materialistic. When I say that we have no money she will just say “Okay Mama, we will buy it next time”. She is a very understanding child. I am thankful for that because I want her to know that it’s hard to earn a living. We work hard for her, her needs. Kyla is God’s precious gift to us.

Toddler's Social Life

As toddlers learn more about themselves and their abilities, they become aware of their social setting. With frequent opportunities for group experiences, they gain an awareness of others and a sense of group identity. Daily group-time incorporates a number of activities, such as songs, games, stories, and more.

* I surf on the net regarding toddler’s issue on their first day in school. I am so excited for my daughter Kyla to go to school next year. I am planning to get her a summer class so that it will be easy for her for the first day in school. I am beginning to teach her about the alphabet and numbers by identifying it. I hope and pray that she can catch up easily though it’s hard to teach them because they are still playing. I will take time and practice long patience for her to learn. *

Congrats BF!

My bf Priscilla delivered a baby boy last July 19. Grrr! I have no chance to view her baby boy because Kyla is sick that time and no one will take care of her. She is fussy when she is sick for she wants me to be by her side and wants me to cuddle her all the time for comfort. I texted her that I cannot come and visit her in the hospital that day and so I told her that I will just visit her in her home when I have time. She texted me that her baby boy looks like her and has brown complexion inherited from her hubby. I’m so happy for her because she has now a little girl and a baby boy. There is nothing to ask for. I hope and pray that God will give me a baby soon after 2 years.

New toy for Hubby and Kyla

Last Sunday we went to SM after going to church. We eat our lunch at KFC, hubby’s favorite fast food store. Kyla was eager to go to TOY KINGDOM to buy a new toy again. Hubby looks for his toy and so it’s another discussion for us whether to buy pricey toys or not. Well, it’s his gift for himself of all his hard work because he never experience having an expensive toys like that of remote control car toys. In short, he bought it. I just agree for him to be happy because he is addict of collecting toys now. He put and display it our office. In fairness, it’s nice but pricey.

Kyla's Jaunt

Yesterday we went to our shop in downtown area, it’s our small business that hubby manage. Kyla was bored and so she wants to go shopping malls or in downtown area to buy toys as usual. I told her to sleep early so that after lunch we will be headed to our shop. She wake up at 1 in the afternoon and so I texted hubby to bring some clothes for her from our house. I took a bath and hubby arrived then we headed to our destination.

Kyla was so excited to stroll on shopping malls to see some new toys for her. She chooses to buy the plastic kitchen utensils toys and the small lake and ladder. After that we went to Jollibee for a heavy snack. Kyla ordered a burger steak with rice, her favorite food at Jollibee. She was hungry because she eats a lot. Hubby and I ordered yummy burgers. After that we went back to our shop then went home at 6 in the evening.

Kyla wants to go home

I and Kyla stayed in my mom’s house for almost 2 weeks because she has fever last week. Hubby’s brother has german measles and that it is contagious. We cannot go home due to its health situation in our home. Kyla keep on saying that she wants to go home. I know she misses her Lola Candy and hubby’s siblings. We have no choice but to stay for a while in my mom’s house. Maybe by next week we can go home. Gee! I miss our room.

How To Use Infant Massage to Relieve Reflux

Massage on any part of the body causes increased activity or stimulation to a nerve in the brain called the vagus nerve. This nerve branches out to control various regions of the respiratory and digestive systems, including the esophagus and the stomach. To use massage successfully for an infant with reflux, follow the steps below:

  1. Position your baby on the floor with a blanket or towel underneath. Ensure the area is nice and warm and that there will be no bright lights in your baby’s eyes.
  2. Place a cushion or a few pillows under her back and head to place her in a comfortable 45-degree angle for massage time.
  3. Use a pure, cold-pressed, organic oil that is fruit-, nut-, seed-, or plant-based and is free from any essential oils or perfumes. It is also recommended that you make sure the oil is edible for when hands or feet are placed in the mouth during massage time.
  4. Find a time that is right for you and your baby, but try to avoid massage at bath time if your baby is under 5 months of age. Many small infants can find this combination overstimulating instead of relaxing. The best time to massage is when your baby is happy and quiet, just after waking from a nap.
  5. Let your baby know that massage is going to begin by talking, making eye contact, smiling, and rubbing your hands together to warm the oil.
  6. Use long, firm, confident strokes. Babies prefer this to a light, feathery massage.
  7. Begin by stroking the legs first, and progress to other areas of the body, concentrating on the areas that your baby seems to enjoy most. If you think that the abdomen is a tender area for your baby, or if you think that massage here might result in posseting, then leave this area out.
  8. For back massage, consider positions that will keep your baby upright. You could try a cuddle position, supporting your baby on your chest and shoulder while leaning back slightly onto a sofa for support, or a side-lying position, while she is still raised at an angle on her pillows.
Source: How to do things

“Massaging your babies is recommended by the physicians because it helps them relax. It must be done after taking a bath. Put some baby oil and apply it in baby’s body. I have tried it when my daughter is in months old. They can sleep straight at night. Then they will wake up with good mood.”

Happy Day!

I’m happy today because Kyla is eating very well. Her appetite has come back. She never complains when she swallows food. I thank you Lord.

I’m happy too because my student has high scores in her first prelim exam last week. At least my hard work in teaching her was successful. Now, she has a new lesson in her math subject which is Multiplication. She hardly understands its method on getting the product. I hope she can get it soon.

What are Antibiotics?

Antibiotics -- great advances on the front of modern medicine...or dangerous medications that cause more harm than good? The answer lies somewhere in between. If you're the parent of a child who has suffered from a bacterial infection such as pneumonia or strep throat, you've experienced the benefits of antibiotics firsthand. Seeing your previously listless baby make a dramatic turnaround, or finally getting a full night's sleep after having been awake the past three nights with your fussy, feverish toddler can make you appreciate the value of antibiotics. It might even tempt you to run to your doctor and plead for another antibiotic at the first hint of your child's next illness. Be wary, though, because all that glitters is not gold. Side effects and resistant bacteria have created a double-edged sword with these medicines. Here are the most up-to-date facts about antibiotics to help you avoid misusing these medications.

Yummy Chocolates!

Kyla loves to eat branded chocolates like Cadburry, Toblerone and M&M. Well, her Mama Lolit(my mother-in-law) always send them branded chocolates. Gee! It’s definitely yummy but costly than any brand less chocolates in the market. It’s too bad when you eat a lot of sweets like that of chocolates because it can cause diabetes. What I do is put it in the hidden place so that she will not get it. Her teeth will be dent if she eats a lot. And if I eat, I don’t show it to her because probably she will ask for more.

Pls..go away!

Last night Kyla can’t sleep. She keeps on moving in her bed. I ask her what she wants. She told me that she is hungry and that she wants to drink milk. Maybe because of her tonsillitis, she is in pain when swallowing foods. I hope and pray that she will be okay by tomorrow and that the bacteria was totally dead because of the antibiotic that I gave her. Grrr! I hope so! Go away!

Mermaid Dora

DORA

Take Mermaid Dora on a magical sea carriage ride! The seahorse features soft, brushable hair and plays melodies and sound effects. Any of the Dora Saves the Mermaids dolls can ride in the carriage (each sold separately). Requires 3 AA batteries.

I want to purchase this Magical Sea Carriage Ride at Fisher Price. But I think they don’t ship here in the Philippines. I better look to some shopping mall here because Kyla likes DORA, the explorer. Hubby bought a DVD of DORA and Kyla watch it sometimes if hubby is at home. When she watches DORA, she is very serious and listens attentively to DORA’s teaching. Now, she knows the meaning of Delicioso and keeps on saying that word. Kyla is a fan of DORA like other kids out there. She wishes that she can see DORA in person even she is a Mascot. Maybe, soon Kyla.

Cutie Pose!?

posing01

While I was browsing on my files here in my PC, I found this photo. We are in SM Mall of Asia here and so I let Kyla pose in this statue. When you enter in that door, it is a gaming store wherein you can play electronic toys by inserting coins. Many are playing there children and adult. They go home with stuff toys in their hand and other freebies. We get envy with them because my sis in law never got a chance to get stuff toy. The coins cost 10 pesos; she tried it thrice but never lucky to have it. We had fun in that day, it was my birthday huh..

Caring for your child with tonsillitis

Read more here..

My daughter Kyla is suffering from tonsillitis. She cannot eat well due to its painful to swallow foods. But she strives to eat little by little. I gave her antibiotic though it’s hard to convince her to take it. She is sleeping right now. I hope and pray that she will not get sick anymore so that we will not be worry for her. If she has high fever, she will have seizure. I thanked God we manage to avoid it by giving her a paracetamol and put her cold wet towel on her head.

Kyla is Sick..:(

My daughter Kyla is sick today. She has no colds and cough. She has high temp of 38 degrees. Gosh! I’m rattle and crazy because there is a tendency that she will have a convulsion or seizure. I hope and pray that God will not allow that to happen for her because if that happens we will gonna rush her to hospital and I don’t want her to have dextrose. It’s hard for the physician to look for children’s veins unlike the adult. I hope and pray that God will use the medicine to heal her. She is very irritated and don’t want to put the wet cold towel on her head. I wish she will cooperate to avoid seizure. Please pray for my daughter Kyla that she will get well soon.

Everyone misses Kyla

Hubby arrived yesterday from Gensan for a wedding coverage. He hasn’t got a chance to drop on my mom’s house because he went to our shop and went home so late. He just texted me that he will come early in the morning and so I was pissed off of him. Kyla was so happy when her Papa was here. She give a hug and kisses to her dad so also with the hubby. Hubby told Kyla that Lola Candy is looking for her because I think it’s 1 week since they see each other because hubby use our room for his temporary work place and that we need to stay in my mom’s house. After eating our breakfast I let hubby and Kyla go to our house to see Lola Candy. Then, I follow in the afternoon.

Kyla is Stubborn!?

Grrr! Kyla is stubborn for sometimes. I told her to not to run because she is kind a “lampa”. She easily gets fall every time she runs or in a hurry to go outside to play with her friends. I scolded her yesterday because she falls in the ground and has wound on her knee due to Anthony call her to get hasten to see his drawings. My mom fixes her hair first because it is long and that she looks “bruha” on it when it is tie up or will have a pony tail. I get sober and so I slap her butt. She cried loud. I told her that from now on she will stay inside the house and will not be going outside to play. Kyla come closer to me and ask forgiveness. I explain to her of what she did and it’s good that she understand.

Warning:Don't use HONEY

Honey can cause food poisoning (botulism) in infants less than one year old. Avoid adding such a sugar to bottles of water or formula and resist the temptation to dip soothers in them. If sugar is needed for constipation, use white granulated sugar. It works the same way and it's safe.

Source: Lambton Health

* I heard that some mom put honey in the water or milk of their babies. I never do that until now but I am planning to try but there is no honey in our place. They said that their babies like it. And now I saw this article that Honey can cause food poisoning in infants. Thank God I never try it in my baby. I am so very careful in giving food to my child when she is a baby. I'm afraid that she will suffer stomach ache. *

Watching TV can have Irregular Sleep

Television viewing may be associated with irregular sleep for infants and toddlers, according to a new study published in Pediatrics (AAP).

In the study, researchers surveyed parents of young children about their child's nap and bedtime schedules along with their television viewing and other household habits. Twenty seven percent of the children had irregular bedtime schedules, and 34 percent had inconsistent nap schedules. The mean hours of television viewing was .9 hours a day for children younger than 1 year, 1.6 hours for children ages 12 to 23 months, and 2.3 hours for children 24 to 35 months.

The research showed a direct correlation between the amount of time a child spent watching television and the regularity of their sleep schedule.

Inadequate sleep can cause a variety of behavior and health problems in children. The AAP recommends no television or media for children under age 2, and less than two hours a day for children ages 2 and older.

Source: American Academy of Pediatrics

* This is true because I observed this in our neighbor here. The child will not take a nap during afternoon due to watching television. The parents still allow their children to do such thing. The child will sleep late in the evening because of watching her favorite TV shows. I thank God because my child is not addict to television. She will only watch "The Singing Bee" because she is a music lover then after that she will have her goodnight sleep. She loves to sleep especially at noon and so I have no problem with her when sleeping. *

Kyla on her Rubber Mat

kyla01

It’s my daughter Kyla in the pic. I ask my bro to take a photo of her sitting in her rubber mat. She sleeps there in the afternoon because it’s too hot in my mom’s room during afternoon. I bought it last month; she is the one who put in the basket. I like it because it has an alphabet and numbers for her to study. I start teaching her everything so that she will be ready if she goes to school by next year. She has study habits now because she will ask me “Study tayo Mama”. Very Good girl!

Kyla's Bday at Forest Hill

4girls

This was taken last March 20..Kyla’s birthday at Forest Hill Resort. We had fun swimming in their big pool. Mom and I prepare buttered chicken, pancit, menudo(Lola Ading’s specialty), kinilaw, spaghetti(Aunt Beng’s specialty), macaroni salad and birthday cakes from Tito Troy and Lola Neneng(Rachel’s mom, gf of my bro). There is so much blessings during her birthday. Well, maybe next year would be a children’s party in our house for a different venue since her birthdays are always a beach party with our family and relatives.

Toddler's Poem

Toddlers

Two little eyes
Discovering what's new
Two little hands
Touching everything in view
A sweet little voice
Asking you why
A mischievous smile
And a whimpering cry
Two little feet
Jumping on the floor
A toddler's mission
is to explore

She's Sleepy?

Getting babies to sleep can sometimes seem like a Herculean undertaking. One crucial part of the equation is knowing when your own baby is getting tired, then taking advantage of that moment to put the baby down to sleep. Yawning is, of course, one indication. But there are many others that might not be as obvious. Some babies rub their eyes, pull their ears or twirl their hair around their fingers. One expert reported hearing from a mother whose baby would simply stare off into space. Initially, the mother thought the baby was bored and would try to entertain her. It turned out the baby was simply tired. Recognizing each baby’s unique way of indicating that they need sleep is a big step towards helping them get the rest they need.

Source: Keep Kids Healthy

**
I remember when Kyla will yawn. She is sleepy in that time. Sometimes she gets irritated easily because she wants to sleep. But she is naughty because she will play so that she can’t sleep. After a couple of minutes she will lie down to the bed and sleep. Gee! She is really a smart kid because she makes a way to be not of sleep early.  **

Well, I hope she will budget her food for 2 weeks. Let’s see.

What are typical behavioral characteristics and challenges?

kaygioChildren are in the Toddler Years from 1 ½ years old until their 3rd birthday. During this time, they go through many new physical, emotional and intellectual experiences, such as:

Source: How Kids Develop

“This is definitely true because my daughter has so much of energy. She is now three years old and can play in long ours with us or with her friends. She is very curious of everything because she is keep on asking you such things that sometimes gets you irritated if you have work. The horrible behavior is when she has tantrums because I cannot control her from crying loud with nonsense matter that I sometimes hit her. But what I do is I will never make “pansin” her so that she will stop from crying. Toddlers are really hard to discipline because they are selfish and needs your attention. “

WEANING is..

Weaning is the time when parents begin to gradually introduce foods other than breast milk or infant formula to their baby's diet. Specially prepared solid foods may be introduced gradually between 4 and 6 months of age.

Cereal-based foods are usually the first weaning foods offered to the infant. Other foods, including strained or mashed fruits, vegetables, meats, and fish, are later added to the weaning diet.

The introduction of weaning foods should not signal the elimination of milk from baby's diet. In fact, breast milk, infant formula, or a follow-on formula designed specifically to meet the nutritional needs of older babies should remain the primary source of nourishment throughout the first year of life.

Weaning is an important stage in your baby's life. It requires much patience on your part, some practice on your baby's part, and a lot of learning by all.

Source: WyethNutrition.com

“ I start weaning my daughter when she is turning three. Gosh! It’s a tough decision for me because my daughter likes my milk than her formula milk. I don’t know why but she wants my milk and so I had a hard time during night because I have work online. I need to wean her for she sometimes destruct my work due to she wants me to breastfeed her. Kyla is old enough to be breastfeed huh. I think I had fever that time and my breast is in pain that I feel it will boom due to the milk inside my breast. Now, I am free and will not be bothered every night. “

Nice Toy!

stroller

Last week I bought a stroller toy for my daughter Kyla. Hubby saw it near our business area. It’s a plastic but fits to her small doll. It’s only 100 pesos, so affordable. I know she will like it. That night she put her doll inside the stroller and they walk in inside mom’s house. Then, the following day she went outside and tells her friends that she has a new toy. Gee! Kyla is kind a humble kid in opposite. LOL!

Kyla is a music lover because she chooses to buy her a music play set toys like guitar, piano, tambourine and many more. She has everything of this music stuff and will sing song that she learns from her Sunday school. I decided to have her piano lesson as soon as she is schooling. Her godmother Jen teaches piano lesson. I know she likes what I want for her. I am a frustrated pianist. LOL! I want to learn to play piano but the piano does not want me. It’s not my talent. LOL!

She's Learning

Image020I’m proud of my daughter because she slowly identifies the English alphabet and knows how to count objects from 1 to 10. She sometimes says “Mama, magstudy na tayo”. Well, she has improvement at last. Kyla is practicing study habits that makes me decide that she is prepared to learn and go to school. I’m so excited for next year that is why I am saving bucks for her schooling right now so that everything is fixing and there is nothing to worry about financial. My mom teaches her slowly by slowly even when sometimes she is not serious but she has determination to learn and know everything academically.

..so dependent to me

We went to church so late. Our pastor begins to preach in the stage. Gosh! We were so ashamed to pass by going to Kyla’s room. She agreed that I will not accompany her inside her room because I will listen to our pastor. After a few minutes she went out and finding me. I have no choice but to be with her so that she will listen to her Sunday school teacher. Last Sunday, I wasn’t there because I am not feeling well. Only hubby and my daughter Kyla went to church. My cousin said that she just sit down and listens to her teacher last Sunday. I want her to go to her room alone without me so that when she is schooling she will not ask me to be with her. I hope someday she will learn to be an independent child.

SEXY Kyla

bikini011st pose
bikini022nd pose

Look who is this little girl on sexy bikini. Gee! Its Kyla my daughter wears her Tita Hannah’s bikini. We ask her to pose for a sexy pictorial like that of FHM. She is kind a “artista” because she can act and do a seductive pose. I let hubby see this photo and he laugh and laugh. Hubby told me not to command such thing to Kyla because he is very conservative father and husband. He doesn’t want her baby Kyla to act as a lady. Well, it will happen someday and so he must be ready for it. I know he will be a strict father of course.

Mother Working Outside the Home

    www.parenting.com

* It is really hard to be a working mom because you don't know how to budget your time. When you arrive at home from work you will take care of your child. Sometimes, if you are tired you cannot have time to have story telling with your child and you will be guilty. I experience that before when I am working. I stop working when my child was sick and was hospitalized. I decided to stop working because my child needs me. I work online right now. I stay at home and can take care of my daughter at the same time. *

Saving for Kyla's Future

Yesterday, I went to BDO at SM to inquire if I can apply a bank account for my daughter. I have an existing account there. I brought her original and photocopy of her Birth Certificate which is the requirements needed to open an account. The opening account would be P 500.00 and so I deposit also some amount of money. They immediately gave me Kyla’s passbook. Gee! I can now start saving for her future, for her schooling next year. Honestly if I put my money on my ATM I am tempted always to withdraw it. I am sometimes 1 day millionaire. LOL! But now I can save at last. I don’t want to struggle next week of where to get Kyla’s enrollment fee and tuition fee. I want everything is prepared for me not to worry. I want to give the best for my daughter Kyla.

Mama Lolit and Kyla

Today is the flight of my mom in law back to Manila. She arrived last Sunday without our knowledge that she will be home. Sis in law just texted me and inform me that mom in law was here in Davao and for that time we were at my mom’s house. She wants to see Kyla because she misses my daughter so much. On her first night at home, they sleep together until the morning because I went home late and that I did not transfer her to our room because they will be disturb in their sleeping.

Last Monday they went to NCCC mall for food shopping. They told me that Kyla was pointing on her food like biscuits, chocolate drink, Stick-O and many more. Gosh! Mom in law will be a hard time budgeting what she put on the cart. Kyla is such a smart kid huh. They just laugh and had fun talking to her for she is talkative. Surely, Mama Lolit will miss her.

Kyla is Well

kylalying02

Thank God because Kyla has no slight fever. It is with the help of FERN-C. Last night mom “hilot” her because we know that she has “pilay”. She always falls on the floor because she is very playful and that she can’t balance herself. But she is very active though she is sick last night. She sleeps well last night. I thank you Lord for you answer my prayers.

Tips for Safety in Child Sleeping

No matter where your young child sleeps, there are safety precautions to follow. Some parents are worried about rolling over on a child if they share a bed. There is a greater risk of suffocation for infants if they sleep with adults, but you can take precautions to provide a safer family bed.

The chance of laying on a child, or overlying, is increased if the adults in a bed have used alcohol, drugs, or are taking medication. Extreme fatigue also raises the risk of overlying. If you are affected by fatigue, alcohol, or drugs while you are awake, you will also be less able to sleep safely with your child. Put your child to sleep alone if this is the case.

There are many cases of babies suffocating because they become trapped between the mattress and the headboard or a wall. Babies are also at risk for suffocating if they sleep on an adult’s chest while the adult is lying on a sofa because they may slide between the back of a sofa and the adult’s body. Place the bed well away from a wall and never sleep with your baby on overstuffed furniture. Take steps so your baby won’t fall out of a bed, such as lowering the mattress to the floor or using a “sidecar” bassinet attached to your bed.

** When my child sleeps on our bed, I usually put a hotdog pillow in each side so that she will not fall. But when she is only months old, she always fall. Hubby scolded every time he knows that our daughter. I am sometimes busy and I forgot to put a pillow. I can notice that she falls when she cried loud. I’m so worried about her and will sometimes hide on my hubby so that he will not get angry with me. I am thankful for this fact so that mom like me will give full care for their child when they sleep. **

Kyla has colds

My poor daughter Kyla has colds. She keeps on moving while sleeping last night because she is hard in breathing. I gave her FERN-C three times a day and glad her colds now are not watery. Maybe because the weather we had in the Philippines, it’s so hot during the day and will rain in the evening that somehow gives us colds and cough or even flu. The PAG-ASA said that there 16 typhoons coming in the Philippines and so Filipinos must be ready of that. I hope and pray that God will protect us from typhoons and some diseases that possibly we get from this weather presently.
